Proposal

Below is a statement of the design approach for this proposal and how it will be extended for the major project.

Intention. Agenda. Motivation.

There are two critical points for this project, the idea of understanding home outside the context of a household became very important. And how can interiority create a sense of belonging in a setting between people from different backgrounds and experiences?

Context

The design project is considered in the context of a multicultural space, where diverse people with different cultural backgrounds use the area.

Site/Situation

The location for this project proposal will be at Nicholson Street Mall, Footscray, Melbourne, Victoria. This site is located at the centre of Footscray, allowing for the community to create and cater gatherings, festivals and connection between diverse cultures. It is a car-free public area, which is a perfect spot to create an installation. The site is part of the city of Maribyrnong.

Next semester for the major project, I will be working on the materiality for the temporary pavilion, and also would be looking at different microsites across the suburb to test the design.

Audience. Occupants. Demographic. User Group

The targeted audience who will encounter the design are people who immigrated to Melbourne, Australia, recently. Who can share any food they cooked on their own, that they consider from the place they knew of as home, to create a sense of belonging through contributing and sharing with diverse people.

The major project will be looking at how to connect the local community and the newly arrived in Melbourne to create a sense of belonging. The demographic of the site is a very multicultural centre for the local community. It holds diverse cultures. Incorporates international cuisine restaurants, bars, and shops, as well as used to celebrate cultural arts and creative activities. This project will allow people to bring their cooked food to share with the community. The idea that makes this project different from restaurant or festival food is that the food is prepared in the house of the people who will encounter the design, which allows them to share something outside their domestic kitchen.

 Stakeholders

The City of Maribyrnong Council could/would be involved in this project.

Practice. Professionalism

Need to consult with the local community and city of Maribyrnong Council. Considerations of designing for people with different backgrounds and experiences. Cultural relationships, without stereotyping. Would consider the food to be a source of connection so that it would not create a cultural misconception.

Design Approach

Conduct detailed research on specific sites and audiences. Create a prototype. To think about how people will encounter the design and what kind of safety checklist would need to prepare for the audience upon coming in the space.

Final Presentation

The aim for the major project is to produce a site-specific temporary pavilion and communicate the design through diagramming, drawings, modelling and rendering.
